Meet the Vendor: Irene Akio + Giveaway
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Irene and I make greeting cards and prints from my artwork.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I’m trying my hand at linocut printing. I’m just at the beginning stages of the learning process and am thoroughly enjoying it. It forces my brain to work in a very different way than when painting in watercolor – I have to focus more on negative and positive space rather than color and texture. I plan to continue experimenting and hope to create some new work in time for the summer show!
What is your favorite new product for 2015?
My favorite new product is my White Rooster (Japanese Bantam) card. Knowing that I enjoy painting animals, a friend forwarded me some pictures he took on a trip to Scotland, which included a wonderful photograph of this little creature. The painting is a bit quieter than some of my other designs, but I like his crazy tail feathers.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
There are so many things I love about vending…meeting customers face-to-face, talking to both shoppers and other vendors about arts and crafts, and getting inspiration from all the creativity in the room. I also enjoy getting to shop myself. I almost always get gifts for friends and family, and also some treats for myself.
Is this a full-time business for you?
This is currently still a part-time business for me. I have an active little toddler and work on my business whenever I have spare time, in the evenings and on weekends. But I continue to add my cards to new stores around the country, and hope to keep growing!
