Meet Our Vendors: Spalted Home
We love Spalted Home and so happy to have her back! Her work is so sweet and it’s exciting to see how her work has evolved over the years. Let’s hear what she has been up to!
Who are you and what do you do?
Hello! I am Jessica Angel and I am the maker behind Spalted Home. I am the creator of the Mini Cactus Kit. It contains everything needed to plant and care for a mini and real cactus. It comes with a tiny vase that is hand made and carved out of ceramics by me in my garage studio. It also comes with soil, rocks for drainage, a pipette for watering, and an instruction card with pictures.
I started Spalted Home a little over 2 years ago making hand carved wooden spoons. When my daughter was born last year I stopped carving and doing any sort of creative work to spend time and take care of her. When the overwhelm started to settle I had a huge creative surge and wondered what would come of it. Soon after the idea for the mini cactus kit came to me and over the course of a few months I worked very slowly when I had a bit of time and the kit was born with each piece almost just as I’d imagined it.
I’m thrilled about where these tiny kits will go and I’m so excited to be sharing them with anyone and everyone who loves plants and tiny things and well made, handmade goods.
Any new exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?
I’ve been working on something even smaller that I’ll be revealing at the show! If tiny is your thing and you like the mini cactus kit then you will want to swing by the booth at the show and see what it is! That’s all I’m sharing for now!
What do you love most about craft show vending?
I love how it’s a little like a mini summer camp! When I first arrive I’m so nervous and then almost immediately I meet another vendor and their kindness and willingness to help out in any way makes me feel so at ease. Over the course of the weekend I get to meet many vendors as they browse and we admire each others hard work and offer best wishes for the show. It’s so nice chatting with my neighbors and getting to know more about their lives and work during the lulls. At the end of the weekend it is so much fun running around and making trades and purchases from other vendors. As a maker myself I love being able to support other hand made businesses and it’s even more wonderful to make trades. When the show is over I feel like I’ve made so many new friends that I get to follow along with a support over social media and I always look forward to the next show so I can see my friends again and make some new ones!
Is this a full-time business for you?
That’s a bit tricky to answer. Currently my full time job is being a mom. In theory it is a full time business but one I work on only at nap time and after bed time and sometimes on the weekend. My plate is very full at the moment so it’s a good thing I really enjoy what I do! It’s what makes me feel like me and that’s pretty great.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
There is the obvious-that everything is so tiny! I’ve been a long time lover of tiny things and it’s so fun to have a tiny product that elicits such excitement. The other thing is how unique it is making it the perfect gift for just about any occasion.here is the obvious-that everything is so tiny!
