Meet Our Vendor: Hazy Dell Press
We love Hazy Dell Press, this family business creating thoughtful and fun books and art for kids that the adults will equally enjoy! My niece went crazy for their stuff a few years back and it made me so happy! We are pleased to have them back with us. Let’s learn more about what they have been up to!
Who are you and what do you do?
We are an independent children’s book publishing company co-owned by an author/illustrator team of identical twins: Kyle Sullivan and Derek Sullivan. We’re based in Seattle and Portland, and we create books that promote empathy, diversity and imagination—and that parents enjoy as much as their children.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
We’ve recently created a 5-Book Slipcase Gift Set that comprises the full Hazy Dell Press Monster Series of chunky children’s board books: Monster ABC; Goodnight Krampus; Get Dressed, Sasquatch!; Hush Now, Banshee!; and Don’t Eat Me, Chupacabra! / ¡No Me Comas, Chupacabra!
We’re very excited to share the 5-Book Gift Set, and our latest book (Don’t Eat Me, Chupacabra!), with our UCU friends. Since 2015, we’ve been able to introduce at least one new book at each UCU, and we’re always overwhelmed and motivated by the response from UCU attendees.
Any new exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?
We’re very excited to announce our recent distribution partnership with Consortium. Through Consortium, we’ve been able to see our books grace the shelves of some of our all-time favorite bookstores including Powell’s in Portland and Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle. Monster ABC was named a Powell’s Staff Pick on its first day of distribution, which is about as cool as it gets for two kids who grew up in Vancouver, Wash.
What is your favorite new product for 2018?
Along with our 5-Book Gift Set, we’re also debuting our 5th book in the Hazy Dell Press Monster Series: Don’t Eat Me, Chupacabra! / ¡No Me Comas, Chupacabra! This book features a young Chupacabra who only wants to eats goats. He represents the ultimate picky eater, and it’s up to a goat to convince Chupacabra to eat something (anything) other than him.
We set the book in Puerto Rico and spotlight Spanish words and phrases throughout to give English-speaking children a fun and engaging introduction the Spanish language. We’re very proud to have been able to donate $1,000 to hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico with partial proceeds from Don’t Eat Me Chupacabra pre-orders.
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
Over the next 3 years we hope to grow the Hazy Dell Press catalog to include authors and illustrators from a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives. We want Hazy Dell Press to mirror the stories we tell by being as inclusive, diverse, and empathetic as a company can possibly be. We can’t wait to release the work of talented authors and illustrators from all over the world and make sure every child looks to Hazy Dell Press as a fun, imaginative and welcoming place to hang out.
