We are so excited to have this cute new vendor join our lineup! If you appreciate good design that has a quirky/cute sensibility, you will LOVE Harumo Sato/Harumo Bakery! Let’s learn all about this new vendor! Enjoy!
Who are you and what do you do?
I am originally from Japan. I currently live in the Bay Area of California with my husband. I work as an illustrator and fine art artist. I love the traditional printmaking method, especially screen printing. You will see a lot of hand screen print products in my shop, like posters, T-shirts, tote bags, cards, etc…!
As an illustrator, I work not only for my shop but also for organizations which have great missions and positive energy to share with everyone. One of my favorite and most important clients is San Jose Made, San Jose’s craft fair organizer. I have created their posters for the local craft fairs for the last two years. This has given me good suggestions and advice from a small business owner. They introduced me to UCU and all it has to offer.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I have been working for the San Jose Japantown Yokoso project. The goal of this project is to welcome individuals into Japantown and revitalize the area with increased interest from locals. I have created original characters for this project which will hopefully attract people to the area and create the means to start a conversation. San Jose Japantown is one of the oldest Japan-towns in this United States and has been cultivated by many great Japanese Americans. As a first generation immigrant, I am so honored to work with them!
How far will you be traveling to come to UCU?
It takes two days by car to come to UCU. My sister-in-law lives in Port Townsend and we will spend some time with her! And the bigger news is, my husband’s parents plan to also come and visit us in the Seattle area from Rochester, NY! Thank you UCU for giving us such an amazing opportunity for the family gathering! I am super excited!
How did you get started in your business?
I went to study at University at Buffalo in New York State. I have much passion for art and printmaking and didn’t know how to use this passion. I was recommended to go to meet the director of Westen New York Book Art Center, WNYBAC, by my printmaking professor so I did. Eventually, she chose me as their first residential artist. They asked me to design their retail shop products and screen-print them. WNYBAC gave me lots of freedom to create any design I wanted. I learned from this experience I could make something to make people happy and support myself.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
Color and happiness! I use totally different styles for my fine art section and illustration. My message is to amplify the appreciation of life and make viewers happy all the way down to their heart. Therefore, I always make an effort to enjoy my life and share smiles with everyone. I believe, my positive feeling will help my creative process throughout my life.
