The Cat Ball
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Jennifer, and I used my background in pattern making and costume design to invent the Cat Ball, a spheroid play cave and bed for cats.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I’ve had a lot of requests for larger beds that can be used for gigantic cats or medium dogs, so I’ve been developing patterns for this product. I’m also looking for ways to upcycle the scraps that I generate.
How did you get started in your business?
I was working as a costume designer and had a project that used this really interesting and highly specialized foam. As I was experimenting with this material, I had a brainstorm that I would like to make a ball, or sphere, for my little orange kittens. I started to experiment with the pattern and the techniques and this whole process is how I developed the Cat Ball. This bed works great because it appeals to feline instinct. The Cat Ball helps them to feel safe and secure, and they also use the space as a fort, where you’ll see them lurking inside, waiting to make ambush attacks from the two Cat Ball openings.
Is this a full-time business for you?
My business has grown to the point where it is full time and then some!
Who’s your biggest fan?
I wish I could say it was Maru or Grumpy Cat, but I do know that Jackson Galaxy likes my product!
What’s your favorite item that you sell?
I really love my Cat Ball. This device is quite functional, most cats take to it immediately, and many people immediately understand that their cats will love it. The Cat Ball looks great in different fabrics, and I love experimenting on the basic design to create special edition pieces, such as the Shark Ball for Shark week, the Prepper Cat Ball for the doomsday enthusiasts, the TARDIS for Dr. Who fans, the Feline Voting Booth Contraption (available in both Democat and Furrpublican).
What do your customers love most about your products?
I get a lot of feedback that the cat(s) love it and do not want to leave it. I also get feedback that the cats fight over it, which is entertaining. Customers have written me wonderful stories about their cats and my Cat Ball, from funny stories about their playful kittens to a few sad (but sweet) stories about how their sick cats spent their last hours resting safely and securely inside the Cat Ball.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
I got an order from an established customer requesting rush delivery for a Cat Ball that was going to be gifted to a White House staffer. I couldn’t fill her order exactly as requested in the time frame, so I showed her a Cat Ball I had made out of Democratic Party fabric. It was a hit! I shipped it to her, she hand delivered it to him, and some lucky White House cat got my Feline Voting Booth Contraption: a Cat Ball made in political party fabric!
