Piece + Pistil
Who are you and what do you do?
We are native Seattle-area sisters Nikki & Heidi Watters of Piece + Pistil. We share a passion for fabrics of any vintage, and re-imagine them into fresh modern quilts. Nikki loves to thrift and Heidi loves to piece – we come together to laugh, listen to loud music and sew. Every quilt is a joy to create and we are proud to donate all time and profits to charities supporting women and children.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
We decided to add bright adult-sized lap quilts because they are especially fun to layout. We’ve been calling the design a ‘stash quilt’ because it comprises a smattering of around sixty different fabrics from across our personal stash of far-flung fabrics. A quilt might include cuts from new designer prints, Grandma’s pillowcase, Kona solids, a men’s shirt and vintage scraps from overseas. The are sewn up sturdy and yarn-tied, ready for a lifetime of enjoyment.
How did you get started in your business?
We collaborated on a baby quilt for a friend. Piece + Pistil is a delightful project for us to pursue together. We have a blast working with each other in support of women and children.
Is this a full-time business for you?
Nope. Nikki divides her time between numerous circus arts classes and work as a machinist at a family business. Heidi is a landscape designer, environmental horticulturist and primarily home-schooling Mom to two girls, who also love quilting and Aunt Nikki. We are proud to continue a long lineage of women creatively re-using what is around them in their scant spare time.
Who’s your biggest fan?
Definitely our immediate family members, who use handmade quilts every day. Heidi began quilting at sixteen with a patchwork quilt for her boyfriend (now husband). It is a unique pleasure to craft a beautiful, intimate object of comfort for loved-ones and strangers alike.
