Who are you and what do you do?
Hi! I am Monster Kat and I loooove Monsters & Robots. In college I studied entomology (insects 🙂 and also scientific illustration, and out of that grew my love of all of the stranger looking creatures on the planet, which then turned into creating my own little characters. The Monsters and I are based in Los Angeles, but travel often for shows around the country. So super excited to visit Seattle!
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
Toys! I am always working on new things, right now I am sculpting to make some toys.
Are you debuting anything new at the winter show?
All of my illustrations are original works (no prints here buddy), so everything is new! Each one of my characters is unique, just like us, and all of my furry Monsters come with their name and a little about them attached. It’s really important to me that someone takes home a one-of-a-kind piece. I will also be working on some special goodies just for Seattle; my ‘Rainy Day Monsters’ are very excited to meet ya’all!
Is this a full-time business for you?
Yes, I have been making art for the past 15 years, and this has been my full-time business for the past 6 years, along with some interesting freelance work I do with animals.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
I can’t say enough how much I love my customers! Supporting independent business is just awesome, and it’s an honor to have the most amazing fans come visit me at shows. Folks have painted me pictures, baked me vegan cupcakes, picked me fresh fruit from their yard, mailed me thank you presents, and so many cute things. How great is that, the sweetest job ever!
