Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Branda Tiffany and I own Molly Muriel, a small business out of Portland, OR making hand-made bath and body products such as soap, lotion, bath & body oils, candles, lip balms, and bath bombs. I started creating these things in my kitchen 18 years ago, and finally made it into a business 11 years ago. Just trying to clean up the world, one household at a time!
Is this a full-time business for you?
This has become a full-time business for me within the past year. I have also hired a p/t employee. Once the momentum began it just keeps going stronger!
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
I want to have a storefront where people can walk in and purchase the individual products I make now, as well as bulk products such as laundry detergent, liquid soap, etc. I want to be part of a conscientious community of people who really care about taking toxins out of the environment.
What’s something you’ve learned through running your business in the past 12 months?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned in the last year is the power of packaging/branding. I started working with a branding company, Relevant Studios in Portland, and within the last year my business has almost doubled. I can’t say enough about the power of getting the point of your product across to the customer through clear and professional package. It may take the right ‘look’ to sell a product, but once the customer tries it, if it’s good, they’ll be a customer for life. And it all starts with the right label.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
I had a woman call me up once who had found my line at a natural food store. She was going through a tremendous amount of physical ailments and had found the herbal infusions in my oils and lotions to be healing to her joints and calming to her psyche. She came out to a retail show I was selling at and loaded up, telling me her whole story of just how amazing the products had been for her. I ended up giving her a discount for purchasing so much, and then helped her out to her car with all the merchandise. It was just so wonderful to know that these products are doing a lot of good out there!
