Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Mikey Anderson an artist from Chicago who graduated with my BFA in Fine art from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and recently relocated to the super trendy Portland! I create quirky little characters for the enjoyment of being immersed in my own silly imaginative world. These characters range from adorable foxes to little hipster dudes who come in the form of plush toys, zines, and key-chains I call “Yarnies.” They are silly, colorful, and googly-eyed creature that wear plaid shirts and bow ties that are reminiscent of the 90’s cartoons I grew up watching.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
The latest things I have been working on is restocking stores with my little plush dweebs! The Holidays are right around the corner and store are already asking for Yarnie ornaments, plushies, and keychains!
Any new exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?
The most exciting thing is this is my first time selling with Urban Craft Uprising and my first holiday season on the west coast with my Yarnies!
How did you get started in your business?
While I was in art school the fashion designer Cynthia Rowley ordered over hundred Yarnies for her fashion week windows in 2010. From that time on I couldn’t stop creating silly characters for people to adopt!
Are you debuting anything new at the winter show?
Yes! I’m having some on my Yarnie characters printed on fabric so I can than turn them into key-chains, funky bows for girls, and pins. Some of the characters included are a sea monster, skeleton girl, and bat dude.
Is this a full-time business for you?
Not yet! But I’m crafting my little heart out this holiday season so Yarnies become my full-time business. I currently have a rad job working with adults with developmental disabilities creating comic books and roaming around Portland.
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
In three years I plan on having them in tons of shops around the world and a studio with an espresso machine! Maybe even having a cartoon or video game!?!
Who’s your biggest fan?
My Mom! She has been my number one supporter. If I need anything I can always count on her to either send me a shipment of Yarnie eyes or a gift card to Trader Joe’s.
What’s something you’ve learned through running your business in the past 12 months?
I have learned it is so important to share my Yarnies with everyone. Sending e-mails to shops, posting on Facebook, and by doing craft shows helps spread the word about my little dweebs.
What’s your favorite item that you sell?
My favorite item I sell is my plush sloths and pugs! Their dopey faces just make me or anyone smile.
What do your customers love most about your products?
I think customers love how unique my plush Yarnies are. They are able to relate them to friends or family members they care about. Everyone in the world is unique and so are my Yarnies. Plus who wouldn’t love a plush pizza face dude?!?
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
Last Christmas I had a customer send me a photo of her son opening up one of my plush Alienies on Christmas day! As an artist creating in our studios or bedrooms we sometimes forget how much our work impacts peoples lives once it out there!
