Meet the Vendor: Whiskey, Ink, & Lace
Who are you and what do you do?
We are a team of crafty makers who create all natural bath and body goods (and occasionally some other home goods and gifts) using sustainably sourced, natural ingredients. We are all about pursuing health in all aspects of life, and we strive to create body care products that provide benefits above and beyond their primary use, so as to benefit our customers’ lives. You can find us here.
What is your favorite new product for 2014?
We’re incredibly excited to be launching a bunch of hair care products at the end of this year, including all natural, sulfate- and paraben-free shampoos and conditioners. Our “head crafter” has hair that she always jokes has a mind of its own, and with the crazy thick curls that she wrestles with, she’s always had to be picky about what products she uses. So with that as inspiration, we’ve created 100% natural hair care products that really work to create healthier hair with absolutely no harmful chemicals. Urban Craft Uprising will be one of the first debuts of our new products.
How far will you be traveling to come to UCU?
We’re headed up from the beautiful city of Portland, but our team is full of transplants from all over the country, many of whom will be making their first trip to Seattle. The founder, Andi, is originally from Southern California, but just moved from North Carolina, so the Pacific Northwest has been a new adventure (and has been very welcoming!). We’re very excited to see the city and meet the many other wonderful crafters.
How did you get started in your business?
Our founder, Andi, found herself in a backwoods town in coastal North Carolina where it was hard to find natural and safe products, and the main local store for shopping was Walmart. With the limited healthy options, she started creating things on her own on the side, while running a marketing business from home. Shortly after making her first batch of soap, she had someone online ask if they could purchase a few bars. October 31st, Whiskey, Ink, & Lace had its first two sales and was officially in business. Just three months later, we hit our 500th order and had more than 60 different products and it had become a full-time job and business. Then at the beginning of 2014, Andi packed up the business in her car and drove across the country to Portland, where she found a team of other crafty transplants who were looking to get on the ground-floor of a creative business. Now, hardly a year old, we offer over 160 different all natural body care products, and will be opening the doors of our first brick ‘n mortar by early 2015. And we’re very excited to see where this goes from here!
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
Our customers absolutely love how all of our products have more uses than just their primary marketed use. All the time, we have customers email us excited because the eye cream they purchased from us also helped to prevent skin breakouts. We also have had a lot of men excited because our shave soaps have not only prevented razor burn, but the ingredients also help to prevent breakouts and reduce blemishes. Or our favorite is that our beard oil scent, The Lumberjack, also can act as an insect repellant (just what lumberjacks need!). And customers love that products like our natural deodorants not only lack the toxins and dangerous chemicals in normal deodorants, but they also have ingredients in them that reverse the damage of toxins and dangerous chemicals.
