Meet Our Vendor: Ugly Baby
Who are you and what do you do?
We are Rosalie and Douglas Gale – the inventors of Shower Art – waterproof art you can hang in your shower with a suction cup. We have been creating unapologetic & immature art pieces for almost ten years.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
More recently we have been experimenting with extra-extra-large Shower Art pieces. 8 1/2 by 11 Shower Arts will be available in limited numbers at the winter Urban Craft Uprising show.
Any new exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?
We were recently featured on King 5 Evening Magazine.
What was your first memory of making something?
My mom taught me how to knit when I was 7 or 8. Once I learned how to increase and decrease, I insisted that I didn’t need any more help and set about knitting a sweater. It was fuzzy and had pink and white stripes. I ran out of yarn before I finished the second sleeve — but I’ve always just been someone who goes with the flow. My pink and white fuzzy sweater had one weird red, acrylic yarn arm. Meh.
How far will you be traveling to come to UCU?
Almost one full mile.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
My favorite part of selling to people in person is getting to see people’s faces when they read Shower Art phrases. Once they discover Shower Art and figure out what it is, there is normally a lot of yelling of the phrases back and forth to friends in other parts of the booth. Cracks me up every time.
Is this a full-time business for you?
And then some! Just full time sounds dreamy! That would seem like a tropical damn vacation!
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
I love having a micro-business and I’m not looking to expand out into some giant factory. If I can keep doing what I love — and make a fair wage doing it — I’ll be very happy with that.
Who’s your biggest fan?
Her name is Anna and she recently moved to Minnesota. Hi Anna!
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
People really value the unique concept of art that you can hang in your shower. Many have never heard of it — or thought something like that would exist. It’s fun when seasoned craft show attendees say things like “I’ve been to a million craft shows and I’ve never seen anything like this.” Pretty good.
