Meet Our Vendor: Tallis by Faith Hats
Winter is the time to get cozy! Be warm and stylish with these great designs by Tallis by Faith Hats.
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Faith, I am the sole proprietor of Faith Hats. I give used cashmere sweaters another life, either through restoration and alteration, or by salvaging usable fiber for hat and scarf making.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
Production work can get really tiring, but it is necessary in this line of work. But recently I’ve been inspired to make realistic sculptures of food out of my cashmere scraps, just for my own amusement! I started with tacos, then I moved on to sushi. Pizza is coming next I think. It helps me look forward to another long day in the studio. What food should I make next?
What was your first memory of making something?
I made art as a very young child, but I think I felt most accomplished in the first garment I sewed from a pattern when I was 8 years old. I made a Holly Hobby style plaid pinafore, and my twin sister made the same dress in a different color plaid. I remember how much I hated sewing at first, then realized I loved it when I stopped trying to follow patterns
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
Cashmere! It really is such a wonderful fiber. I think many people think it’s too expensive, or too hard to care for, but it doesn’t have to be. I believe everyone should get to own cashmere, so I make sure I have all price ranges in my line.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
Many of my Original Faith Hats have been given as gifts to cancer patients in Chemo, since cashmere feels so soft against the scalp, and each hat is embroidered with “faith”. A customer emailed to thank me for making the hat that she wore every day during her battle with cancer, saying it really did help her keep the faith. And in fact, on the very day she was given a cancer free verdict, she lost the hat. She said she was actually glad to lose the hat, and thanked me again! I loved that story.
