Meet the Vendor: The Sweet Potatoe
Who are you and what do you do?
Hello! I’m Maria Aldana, founder and designer of The Sweet Potatoe. I love earl grey tea, interiors and of course, kid fashion!
After working in the corporate world, I decided to go back to school for fashion and moved to NYC for a few years on a tight budget. I interned for a few of my favorite designers in their fabric and production departments. My first design teacher was a kids clothing designer and I never imagined that would be an interest of mine down the road, until I had my little man Skye, who is now almost 3 years old. Our illustrator, Richard, is a chef by day and an illustrator by night; he designs our screenprinted tee collections; which include Wear Me, Electric Youth, Spaced Out and our newest Dreamy & Watermelon Angels tees.
We are a hip and modern kids brand that launched in June of 2014 in Redmond, WA. We started out by selling our first designs at our local Saturday Farmer’s Market in Redmond, WA and shortly launched our small collection online and at a few local kids shops. Our focus is comfortable clothing for play and travel, focusing on soft and high quality fabrics.
What was your first memory of making something?
My first memory of making something was in elementary school. I made a little purse made out of magazine scraps and used rope for the handles.
What is your favorite new product for 2016?
My favorite product for 2016 are our pocket tops. I’ve had a lot of feedback from customers that their little toddlers have been stuffing their toys, crayons, leaves and even snacks in there. That was the major reason why we decided to add a large pocket to our tops, so the little explorers would have a place to put their little treasures when they are out playing.
How far will you be traveling to come to UCU?
We started out in the Seattle area, but this summer we will be traveling from Southern California, as we are temporarily living in the Orange County area.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
I love the vibe of craft shows, especially during setup and breakdown. It really sums up the dedication and passion that makers have for their craft and small business. I love seeing people setup their displays from scratch and seeing the booths come to life. It’s so inspiring!! And overall, I love meeting new people; fellow shop owners and of course, the customers!
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
The fabric quality and bold prints we choose for our fabrics.
