Meet the Vendor: Stonedware Company
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Ariel Zimman and I have been working with clay since my first pottery lesson in third grade! After studying ceramics and sculpture in college I moved to Portland and pursued working in the arts, until I decided to start my first business, RELM Studios in 2013, designing and making ceramic home decor. After the legalization of cannabis in Portland I saw a need in the market for a modern take on smoking ware and formed Stonedware Company in 2015 to create aesthetically pleasing designs for medical and recreational consumption. As more adults turn to cannabis for a variety of reasons I feel their should be an equal variety of options on the wares they choose to have in their home and use on a regular basis.
What was your first memory of making something?
I have always been an “art kid” from an early age, I was always creating, coloring, cutting, glueing, sculpting with whatever supplies were available. I am very lucky to have parents that have always supported my art and my passion to create. I really fell in love with clay in third grade when I started taking pottery lessons after school. I was hooked! The feeling of clay sliding threw my finger tips was intoxicating. I have continued to throw on the wheel ever since in addition to learning new techniques and methods of working with clay in it’s many forms.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
I love getting to talk directly to the customer about my products and hear their immediate feedback. In addition to getting to educate shoppers about my products I always get great ideas about other products or designs to make next!
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
I think my customers really appreciate a fresh take on smoking wares. Until recently there haven’t been many options aside from glass pipes and thats just not the look a lot of cannabis users enjoy or want in their home. I provide a fresh take on an intimate object that can and should be left on ones coffee table or mantel. Smoking wares that are both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
I’ve had a number customers SOOO excited to see new smoking wares that look nothing like the typical pipe. They are able to see how Stonedware pieces would fit in with the rest of their home decor and curated possessions.
