Meet the Vendor: SSFDesigns
Who are you and what do you do?
I am a self taught emerging clothing and costume designer. I love to make clothing that has a retro and old Hollywood feel with a twist something that make the clothing whimsical and one of a kind. Maybe I do this by adding little details flowers, ruffles or mixing different fabrics or colors together. I do a lot of custom orders and love the challenge of creating a special dress or a unique costume.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
The latest thing I have been working on is a retro 50s style dress for a bakery that is opening back east. Its a 50s style dress with the look and feel of a chefs coat. Its been fun to make I had to dye the fabric to get it the perfect color then create a dress patterns that was part chefs coat and part dress. It turned out really cute .
I also have been doing a lot of costumes, one has been a Belle zombie dress I dyed fabric yellow then tea stained it to give it a old and worn look. It was a challenge making something new look old and worn.
What was your first memory of making something?
My first memory is when I was in high school I wanted to be a model. I had seen this very bright blue pant suit in a magazine. I had to have it, so I recreated the outfit to wear to a dance.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
This is my first craft show that I have participated in. I am not sure what to expect but I am very excited to be involved and to be around so many creative people.
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
I hope that in 3 years my business will have grown to the point that I can retire from my day job as a florist and focus all my energy on creating clothing and costumes. I hope to have employed a least two more people to help with my business.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
One experience I had recently was when I recreated a dress for a customer. She wanted to recreate a photo grandmother had taken when she was young . It was amazing how much they looked alike and how well the dress turned out. It made me feel good to be a part of the recreation of family history.
