Meet our Vendor: Salato Design
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Katie Evans and I am the designer behind Salato Designs.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I have just started making Fanny Packs that can also be worn as a shoulder/crossbody bag. I was never really a fan of fanny packs but especially having kids I wanted a hands free option. I created a fanny pack that is stylish and modern that anyone could use. I love feeling stylish when I use it, not like a lost tourist in some tropical destination. haha.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
I love doing craft shows because its my chance to create my own “shop space”. I make all of my products in my studio in my house. So when I do a show its my chance to show people my brand in person. I would love to have a store front one day but until that day I will use craft shows and markets as my opportunity to create that shop.
I also LOVE getting to meet customers in person. There are so many people that I have formed friendships with through social media and when I get to meet them in person usually at a craft show its really amazing.
How did you get started in your business?
I have always dreamed of doing something in the fashion industry. I earned my degree in fashion design from the University of Hawaii, but after graduation I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do. My husband was/is in the Army so I knew that we would be moving around a lot and trying to work for a major label would be out of the question.
About a year and half later I was a new mom and needed a way to get my creativity out. I saw some cute bags that weren’t really my style and thought maybe I can make my own bag and clutch. So i bought some fabric and started making patterns and trying out different styles until I found what I liked. I then started doing a night market once a month with my best friend that made jewelry and from there Salato took off.
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
In three years I hope to expand Salato to not just purses and screen printed shirts but to create a lifestyle brand. I would love to have dresses and swimwear also. The past four years we have had to move every year because of my husbands job but we just bought our forever home and will be laying down our roots in Washington and I could not be more thrilled.
