Meet Our Vendor: Render Skincare
We think a lot of folks that have various skin issues are addicted to Render Skincare after the summer show. Come restock your cabinets for the winter is coming.
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Kari and I am the owner/maker at Render Skincare.
Render is a small-batch skincare company based in Bellingham Washington. Our goal is to highlight grass-fed tallow as a sustainable and highly nutritious resource for your skincare needs. Tallow is a traditional ingredient that doesn’t conform to the mass-produced, and all-too-often toxic, “beauty” industry standards. This means that every single jar of our skincare is hand crafted: from the farm to your skin. We source all of our raw tallow from small-scale northwest farmers who raise their cows on grass, sunshine and, of course, a whole lot of rain.
Our line of skincare products is simple and versatile. Our Tallow Balms and Whips can be used all over the body and face as deep, restorative moisturizers. Tallow is also highly compatible for all skin types and is helpful in healing a range of skin skin issues, such as: eczema, psoriasis, acne, burns, scars, callused and cracked feet, dry skin, rashes, diaper rashes, stretch marks, itchy and blotchy skin. The list goes on. If you’re ready for a new skincare routine, one that heals, nourishes and is free of toxins and synthetic ingredients, we would love to share Render with you!
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
This fall and winter we are super excited to introduce two new seasonal blends to our lineup. These will be short-run products just to get us into the seasonal spirit. These two blends, Tulsi + Peppermint Whip and Cinnamon + Blood Orange Whip, are so dreamy. They will instantly transport you to cozy fire-side cuddles and snowcapped mountains and are perfect for stuffing in stockings.
How did you get started in your business?
Six years ago, or so, my dearest friend had the worst case of dry winter hands. You know when the seasons change and the air gets crisp and suddenly your skin is a desert and NOTHING helps? It got so bad that her hands were cracking and bleeding. We are both DIYers at heart so we started making all sorts of concoctions: mango butter, shea butter, coconut oil, almond oil, you name it, we tried it. Nothing really healed them.
So I took to the Google and went down a rabbit hole of home-remedy blogs and natural body care tutorials. I eventually found out about Tallow on a homesteading blog. The author, who suffered from eczema, had made a balm with Tallow and it was the best thing she could find that actually helped her heal. So I went to our local butcher, brought home a heap of suet and started rendering it into Tallow. The balms we made from that healed her hands and we shared it with friends and family and never looked back.
Fast forward a few years, this same friend, encouraged me to bring the goodness of Tallow to the masses and Render was born. I built the business in the evenings, after my day job and my parenting duties were over. In September of this year I celebrated my one-year business anniversary!
Building and growing this business really has been one of my most fulfilling endeavors. Knowing how much things have changed and evolved over the past year, I really can’t wait to see where this business takes me!
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
We have a dual focus for where we see ourselves in the next 3-5 years. Our hope is to see our products on the shelves at mainstream stores. But with that, we also hope to see Tallow become a more well-known and understood ingredient in the skincare industry. We are huge proponents of the slow-food movement and it is our goal to bring more of that mentality and philosophy to the skincare industry. When we think of whole body health we know that whole, natural ingredients are best. Ideally, we avoid synthetic or over processed ingredients. This is a standard we like to hold for our skincare routine, as well. We consider our products food for the skin. It’s been exciting to see the shift in consumer awareness of products like ours over the years and we’re really looking forward to our role in the continued growth of small-scale, natural selfcare products.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
Most folks love how it smells or how it feels when they first try it, but the real love comes after using it for a few days. It’s the difference they feel in their skin when they switch from their normal product. Tallow is this magical ingredient that I really can’t take any credit for. We meet a lot of folks who use natural fats like coconut oil or shea butter on their skin. Since Tallow is a fat, the first reaction is often “isn’t it all the same?” The real difference is that we are animals, not vegetables. So the fat from coconuts, or shea, or argan, just don’t have all nutrients our skins needs. So I think it comes down to feeling that difference, of using a clean, natural and highly compatible fat to nourish your skin.
