Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Yuko, and I’m the artist/owner of Honeyberry Studios, my small stationery business in Seattle. I love creating whimsical illustrations in watercolor and design uplifting greeting cards and other paper goods to make someone smile. I grew up in a small town in Japan and spent a lot of time outside playing in the woods and rice paddies. It’s no surprise that my creative inspirations come from the nature and plants.
What was your first memory of making something?
I loved to draw as a child. I remember drawing an alien with crayons in preschool. It was for a children’s book project my preschool was working on, and every child’s drawing was included in the book. I remember feeling disappointed because the picture didn’t turn out as good as I thought it was going to be – I guess I was already having the common experience all of the beginning artists have 😀
What is your favorite new product for 2017?
I love my 2018 Happy Beautiful Day calendar! I’ve made calendars for the past 2 years, and they’ve been my customers’ favorite, too. This year’s new calendar is filled with colorful flower paintings and encouraging messages for each month. I love it when my customers tell me how my art helps them feel grounded and happy. Calendars are great way to incorporate art in your every day, and make a perfect holiday gift, too.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
Oh, I love meeting my customers and seeing their reaction to my work in person. There is something very special about seeing someone’s face light up as they browse my products. Obviously, I care a lot about what I make, so when my creations resonate with my customers, and they tell me how much they love what I make, it’s extremely rewarding.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
I did a survey with my fans earlier this year and asked what they liked about my work. Theresponse was so nice. Many of them said my art made them smile, they loved my unique sense of color, and they enjoyed the positive messages I often include in my artwork. I used to work in social service for almost 15 years before I changed my career 2 years ago, and helping people has always been my passion. Even though I don’t help people in a tangible way as I used to, I’m happy that my work is still making a positive difference in someone’s life!
