Meet our Vendor: Hazy Dell Press
Who are you and what do you do?
We are Derek and Kyle Sullivan, monozygotic twin creative partners. We started Hazy Dell Press in 2015 to create children’s books, prints, posters and apparel that are for adults as much as for children. Derek is an illustrator who lives in Seattle and Kyle is a writer who lives in Portland. So far, we’ve published three children’s books: Monster ABC, Goodnight Krampus and Get Dressed, Sasquatch!
What do you love most about craft show vending?
We love connecting with our customers and hearing their thoughts and experiences with our products in real-time. We’re blown away every year with the positive responses and encouragement that craft show customers bring to our booth. People come to us every show with ideas and feedback and an overall positive energy that can’t be replicated by selling things online. The customer’s reactions really help to inform our creative decision-making. In fact, we created Goodnight Krampus because we received so many positive comments about Monster ABC’s Krampus at craft shows in 2015.
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
Over the next three years, we hope to continue publishing books in our monster board book series and branching out into storybooks aimed at a slightly older audience. It may not happen in the next three years, but eventually we hope to be able to publish and champion the work of other artists under the Hazy Dell Press imprint.
What’s your favorite item that you sell?
We love all of our books equally (really!) but we’re very excited about our newest book that just came out this month: Get Dressed, Sasquatch! This is our funniest book yet, with three main characters that play off each other in surprising ways. We love that this book is set in our home environment (the Pacific Norhwest) and honors our favorite monster of all-time: Sasquatch. We can’t wait to interact with Urban Craft Uprising customers and get their real-time reactions.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
Parents love that they can laugh along with our books as much (if not more) than their children. So many children’s books bore parents to tears, but we take a lot of pride in making sure that our books keep parents interested and laughing along with their kids. A lot of our customers (like us) don’t have children of their own, but nevertheless (like us) love children’s literature as an art form and are always on the lookout for original, intelligent and cheeky new titles.
Be sure you are following us on Instagram for your chance to win a copy of Get Dressed, Sasquatch! children’s board book.
