Meet our Vendor: Ground Up PDX
Give another warm welcome to another new vendor, Ground Up PDX both doing good and making good!
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Carolyn and I am one half of Ground Up PDX, a gourmet nut butter company with a mission to #spread good! We provide an opportunity for women in Portland to get back on their feet through a 6-9 month employment training program. During their time with us (making and selling nut butter!), they gain skills and confidence to transition into full-time work elsewhere!
What is your favorite new product for 2017?
We just introduced an Oregon Hazelnut flavor which has been incredibly popular so far! Made from an almond and hazelnut base, it’s blended with honey and a touch of chili powder, then swirled with chunks of hazelnuts so our Oregon nut really shines through. It’s great with savory and sweet things, so it’s one of our most versatile flavors!
What do you love most about craft show vending?
My favorite part might be the opportunity to shop at all of the OTHER vendors! Ha. But really—craft markets bring together some of the most beautiful, unique and quality work out there, and instead of having to seek out small artisans online or at boutiques, they’re all in one place! It’s the best. (Although my wallet’s never happy afterwards.)
How did you get started in your business?
A year ago (right around when Julie and I met!,) we brought our passions together with a vision for social change. Julie had a clear vision for an employment training program that would provide women with an opportunity to create change in her life, and she just needed a product! (She had just returned from Uganda where she was managing a similar employment training program for 150 women abroad.) Meanwhile, I had been making small-batch nut butters and selling to friends and family for years, with many urging me to turn it into an actual biz. When I met Julie, it wasn’t long before we realized that nut butters could be her product, and that we could bring our passions together to create an impact.
Is this a full-time business for you?
As of 2 weeks ago, it is! My business partner Julie and I both recently left our full-time jobs to pursue this with all of our energy. We’ve got lofty goals of employing other women soon, too, and really getting our employment training program going!
