Meet the Vendor: Green Grin
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Beth Grimsrud, and I sew soft toys, art Plush, and fingerless gloves, all from reclaimed textiles.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?:
My most recent project has been designing baby rattles. I’ve had a lot of customer requests for them, so I’m playing around with a few different shapes, and I will be debuting them at this summer’s show!
What was your first memory of making something?:
My first memory of playing with fabric was when I was quite small, as I was able to comfortably hang out under the kitchen table. My Mom would cut out her sewing projects on the table, dropping the scraps to the floor. I would scoot around collecting them, and roll ’em, fold ’em, and imagine all the cool things I could make out of them, if only I was dexterous enough. I’m happy to report that I now possess the coordination and skills to sew just about anything out of fabric that I can imagine!
What’s something you’ve learned through running your business in the past 12 months?:
A big thing I’ve learned about running my own business this past year, is to stick with it. That means no three-month long vacation after the Holiday season is over! It works much better if I stick to a regular work schedule in the studio, even during the slow months when sales are low. Build up inventory ahead of time to avoid those 10-hour days at the sewing machine (not fun). It’s all about balance. I also took a small business class and have been incorporating better business practices (bit by bit!).
What’s your favorite item that you sell?:
It’s hard to choose a favorite item, but I do love my fancy Art Plush pieces. It’s nice to see someone really connect to a character I’ve made; sometimes it’s almost like a soul-mate kind of thing. I just got an email from a valued customer telling me about the happy song she sings whenever she is in the room with her Green Grin Plush collection. Wow, that warms my heart!
