Meet Our Vendor: Gold Standard Workshop
Who are you and what do you do?
Hi! I’m Kristie, maker and owner of Gold Standard Workshop, based in Seattle. I make modern fabric traveler’s notebooks, notebook inserts, planner clips, and cheeky notepads with luxuriously thick paper.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I just released my Fall line of seven new designs of traveler’s notebooks that feature gorgeous Rifle Paper Co. florals and bold black and white patterns. I strive to find modern designs that are beautiful accessories to your style! In addition to the Fall line, I’m also developing new interchangeable inserts like an art journal and weekly planner that will be available at the fair.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
This is my first craft show and I’m SO excited! I’m a huge craft show/antique show/flea market lover. I’ve been a fan of UCU since I moved to Seattle in 2007. It hasn’t quite sunk in that I’m a vendor this year! Eek!
How did you get started in your business?
I’ve always been crafty and loved DIY. My home has always been filled with things I’ve made by hand, painted, re-purposed, covered with fabric, you name it. I always had the desire to create handmade items to sell, but I couldn’t pinpoint one item to start with, and it wasn’t until last year that I leapt into small business. I started a DIY blog (also called Gold Standard Workshop) in January. In May, I ordered a traveler’s notebook online but didn’t love the quality and I immediately knew I could make something better. So I worked through some prototypes over the summer and started selling on Etsy. Fast forward one year and now I have a huge list of products I’d like to develop. It’s been a really fun and fulfilling experience to follow my dream!
What’s something you’ve learned through running your business in the past 12 months?
I just celebrated one year in business in September and I have learned so much I sometimes feel like my brain is full! I’ve never worked harder in my life doing something I love so much. I’m a one woman show right now and working a full-time job while maintaining the blog and shop is a lot of work and sacrifice. I rarely have a day off and there are times when I’ve wanted to quit. But I’ve learned to take self-care seriously and take a few days away when I feel burnt out or exhausted–it’s so important, both for health, inspiration, and motivation!
