Meet Our Vendor: City Kid Style
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Claudia and I own City Kid Style, a clothing company for girls ages 6 months through age 12. I make one of a kind and limited edition dresses and tops primarily out of upcycled clothing. I make everything myself out of my home sewing studio here in Seattle.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
This fall I introduced my pinafores which I make out of button downs combining a mix of plaids, stripes and whimsical trims. I have also finished up my spring ’17 line which includes crop tops, layered twirl skirts made from button downs and layered twirl dresses made from t-shirts. All of these items will be available at the winter show.
Any new exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?
I think the most recent exciting event for my business is that I just participated in the Kids Runway Show for Vancouver Fashion Week. This was my first runway show and it was something completely new for me. They asked me to create 16 one of a kind looks made completely from upcycled materials. It was a ton of work to prepare for but so worth it. The actual show was exhausting and a complete whirlwind but also so much fun. It was pretty awesome seeing little models walk down a professional runway in my designs!
What was your first memory of making something?
I used to make things for my dollhouse…bed spreads, pillows, etc….I also made myself a bathing suit when I was about 10. My first “upcycled” garment that I made was my prom dress…I took a long sparkley dress dress that I found at a thrift store and turned it into a cute 1960’s style shift dress.
What is your favorite new product for 2016?
My new crop tops for sure… They are made from upcycled t-shirts and feature an exclusive design for City Kid Style by artist Stephanie Corfee. I wish I could pull off wearing one!
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
Last summer at the Urban Craft Uprising summer show I had a conversation with a woman and she told me how much I inspired her to go home and start sewing again. It was so nice to know that my work actually inspired some one to go and be creative themselves! I love that! And that’s what I love most about craft shows is that you really get to connect with your customers on a personal level.
