Meet the Vendor: Business Catual
Who are you and what do you do?
Business Catual is a small business from Portland, OR that handcrafts bow ties for cats out of recycled materials! Our goal is to make fun cat products out of recycled or repurposed materials, and donate our profits to animal welfare organizations. The fun doesn’t stop at bow ties, we’ve designed postcards, bottle openers, buttons and even magnets. You can find us here.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
This year, we’ve been working on cat yarmulkes. We’ve had a strangely huge request for this product so this year we are trying our hardest to develop it.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
I love our repeat customers. Cat parents come to UCU over and over just to buy their cat a BC bow tie because they love our products. It is so funny to hear the stories of cats wearing their bows, and usually folks bring photos for me to see. I really love hearing about their cats, and seeing all sorts of silly cats wearing bow ties. It makes me giggle. Even when I travel far away from the PNW I get people who recognize Business Catual from Instagram or Twitter and they are so excited. It makes me happy that I can bring so much joy to people and their cats.
Who’s your biggest fan?
We have two biggest fans, and they are friends. Natalie lives in Portland, OR and Clara lives in Austin, TX. Clara fosters cats with special needs, and Natalie adopts many special needs cats (and this is how they became friends). Both of them have bought dozens of Business Catual bow ties and their cats wear them constantly! Clara’s cat Georgia recently passed away and during her last week Clara had a special photo shoot to commemorate her beautiful life. She had Georgia in her favorite bow tie, and was so happy that she looked so pretty. Natalie has more pets than I can count on one hand, including Abb the blind cat, (that Clara fostered) who is an Instagram sensation. Abb is very well known for his dapper bow ties. Just last week the two of them came by the Business Catual booth at the market in Portland and practically bought me out of the new styles I had. I can’t wait to see all the photos.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
I think that customers love that we donate our profits to animal shelters. We do our best to help cats and kittens find safe homes to live in, because we love cats! This is just about a full time business for me (I substitute teach too), but after I pay the business expenses and labor, the rest of our profits go straight to helping cats. I think this means a lot to people who buy our products. There are other cat bow tie businesses out there, but none that give their profits to cats.
