Meet Our Vendor: Bread and Badger
We are happy to have Bread and Badger back to our winter show! Not only is their work super fun and functional but they have a really inspiring story behind their business.
Who are you and what do you do?
Hi! I’m Amanda Siska, and I run Bread and Badger in Portland, OR. I create fun, positive art using many mediums, which is then sandblasted onto ceramic mugs, glassware, and stainless cups with the help of my studio assistant. We believe in making useful products that people will feel connected to for a lifetime.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
We’ve just launched a new line of stainless steel cups, which are great for camping and outdoor use because they’re unbreakable and nest inside each other. The larger ones also fit a travel lid, which keeps out dirt and bugs while enjoying your fireside beverages. We took them camping and to the beach this summer, and loved them! These also fit perfect with our new Great Outdoors Collection of camping designs and mugs that mimic enamelware (but are really solid ceramic for everyday use).
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
Earlier this year, I was focusing on wedding-themed designs and considering a line of paper goods, but my attention has changed a little as I’ve been making a lot of my own cosmetics and cleaning products at home. I’m interested in pairing our mugs and smaller glasses with handmade candles and shaving soap, since our cups are very versatile. I’d love to showcase all that can be done with the products we already have, by combining other useful household products into our collections. Expect to see some soap and candle collaborations with other local makers soon!
Who’s your biggest fan?
I was just thinking about this! We have a really special customer in Indiana who has ordered a lot of custom logos and designs for her friends and family over the past few years. She likes to celebrate her friends’ new business ventures, and their favorite things with a set of custom mugs and glassware, which is EXACTLY what I love doing!
It’s such a dream come true to work with someone on so many great projects, showing love and support to so many with a perfect blend of useful objects that are perfectly personalized just for them. Plus, she keeps me busy with challenging designs that are often outside my comfort zone, which is always really rewarding to accomplish.
What’s something you’ve learned through running your business in the past 12 months?
I’ve learned that nothing is set in stone, and not to try to predict too much. Between all the political turmoil, a family medical crisis, all the natural disasters and tragedies, and generally missing every deadline I’ve set for myself this year, there is just so much that has turned out differently than I’d expected. But our business is still plugging along–despite everything–and keeping our family afloat!
I’m trying to be more mindful, and present in every moment, since there are too many unexpected factors that can turn life upside down in a heartbeat. I’m trying to be kinder to myself, by having more reasonable expectations of my work abilities. I’m making sure my family gets more of my attention, and my friends know I’m supporting them too. There’s still so much good in our country, and looking for the good everyday makes it all a bit more bearable.
