Meet the Vendor: Blu Skillet Ironware
Who are you and what do you do?
We are Blu Skillet Ironware, a partnership between Patrick Maher and myself, Caryn Badgett. Together, we make blue steel pans – they’re iron pans but forged rather than cast. Patrick has been working with metal as an artist and blacksmith for 20+ years, and I’m a painter with a love for cooking – so when Patrick stumbled on an old carbon steel crepe pan of mine, we had one of those ‘aha’ moments! Many prototypes later and a lot of tasty testing, we launched Blu Skillet Ironware. Patrick forges the pans and I blue them, which is the seasoning process that gives them their beautiful blue color. It’s been a little over a year now, and it’s been a wonderful adventure with an increasing line of hand-forged wares.
Any new exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?:
We added a gift registry to our website this spring! We had a couple ask if we could do a wedding registry for them, so we did some fiddling with the site…and voila! We like to think of the pans as heirlooms that can be passed down to the next generation, so it feels really great when they’re given as wedding gifts.
How far will you be traveling to come to UCU?:
All the way from Ballard!
Is this a full-time business for you?:
Yes and then some!
Who’s your biggest fan?:
Each other. The partnership has been a really wonderful thing to stumble into. The entire business, from idea and logo, to website and product design…has been a collaborative process that became more than the sum of its parts – we’re constantly amazed by each other and what we’re been able to do together!
