Meet the Vendor: BeMused Creations
Who are you and what do you do?
Hi, I’m Debbie (or Deborah when I’m feeling more grown up). I’m the designer/maker/mad scientist behind the colorful enamel jewelry designs I’m perpetually driven to create. I love to play with fire (I used to carry around a load of firewood in my trunk for those impromptu after work bonfires in the woods or at the beach and even performed in a pyrotechnics show in London). I’ve channeled that fiery impulse into my torch fired enamel and repurposed jewelry line.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I’ve been obsessing over all the nature I see on my morning walks with my energetic 15 month old pup around the Seattle area. I have such a brown thumb that I tend to kill just about everything except the hardiest of succulents. As such, I like to focus my creative powers on making realistic or imaginary things inspired by nature of late. Lots of cherry blossoms, flowers and all sorts of colorful vibrant leaves.
What was your first memory of making something?
I think my earliest memories of making things revolved more around what a downer it was to always have to clean everything up after a session of creative inspiration. Whether it was making candles or FIMO incense holders in the form of Tigger (umm…yeah) I felt the burden that clean up seemed to last longer than the session of making which really slowed down my growth as a creative person. Thankfully, my husband has always firmly believed he gets a better version of me if I have a space to create unfettered. I’ve taken over the dining room, parts of the basement and soon our garage too, and I only have to clean up when it becomes unbearable to ME.
What is your favorite new product for 2016?
Probably my enameled cherry blossom necklaces with cute little “berry” beads and occasionally a few tiny enameled leaves.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
I love the immediate feedback I get on my work, the delight on peoples faces as they see something unique, colorful and handmade in a world increasingly full of throw-away trivialities. Though I understand buying online is the wave of the future, that’s not where I focus my efforts. I always save the best pieces for my in person shows where I can usually make adjustments to the piece if needed to make it perfect for the buyer or gift recipient. I love to setup my booth with thoughtful creativity and unexpected details to enhance the in person experience and make every customer feel special, as well as the energy and camaraderie with the other vendors at a great show.
