Meet Our Vendor: Barkley Sound Bags
Who are you and what do you do?
We make durable and colorful bags out of recycled sails!
Barkley Sound Bags is a one-man shop based in Seattle, Washington. All bags are made from recycled sail material, and each bag is laid out with attention to the unique character of each sail: batten pockets, cringles, reef points, and bolt ropes are fully integrated into an individual bag’s strong design. The seamster, David Rutherford, is a retired architect, Seattle native, and avid sailor. Over the years his bags have been sold internationally and featured in magazines such as Harper’s Bazaar, Gray, and GQ.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
We’ve been working on a duffel bag made from BLACK sail material — certainly a first for us. The bag is wonderful and sleek — it’s like a photo-negative of our standard duffel bag, which is made from white dacron (standard sail material).
Any new exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?
This is our 10th year making bags.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
Meeting new people, and seeing what the other vendors and artists are up to. We find it inspirational to be around so much creative energy.
How did you get started in your business?
My daughter needed a bag, and we didn’t have one – but we did have an old sail that had just come off our boat. We got to thinking, and a few tries later she had a bag and the business was born.
What’s something you’ve learned through running your business in the past 12 months?
There are some people who really love what we do — be them sailors or now — who love our bags for the quirks and personality and uniqueness — and those are the people we really love to see with our bags over their shoulders.
What’s your favorite item that you sell?
Probably the Hood River Totes — they’re made from recycled windsurf sails, and are neon and each one is one of a kind. They are like a 1980s ocean and beach fever dream. And my son uses his to go grocery shopping.
