Meet the Vendor: afterword
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m Clarity and Afterword is my business- it is a marriage of plants and vintage books. I use the spines of the books to make planters and storage crates.
What was your first memory of making something?
I remember sewing a ballerina tutu for my Cabbage Patch Doll when I was 7 or 8. Both of my parents are incredibly creative and I was lucky to be able to take art and craft classes as a kid.
How far will you be traveling to come to UCU?
About 70 miles, from picturesque Anacortes, gateway to the San Juan Islands.
How did you get started in your business?
I’ve had another handmade business for the last 18 years, Friends of Socktopus, which is a line of stuffed animals and soft goods. But plants and books were always passions of mine and I decided to start Afterword as a side venture. It’s fun to work with different materials and move outside my comfort zone.
Is this a full-time business for you?
Between Friends of Socktopus and Afterword, I am a full time handmade business owner. It’s an ideal arrangement because I have young kids and I like being able to work from home.
