Meet the Vendor: Material+Movement
Who are you and what do you do?
Heather Kraft is a glass artist turned ceramic cold worker. In 2009, she started Material+Movement, a practice that takes vintage ceramic china and repurposes it into jewelry for the conscious world. She hopes she can give relevant purpose to otherwise forgotten, outdated objects. She lives and works in Ballard, Washington.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I’ve added lots of new designs to my work incorporating chain tassels and metal elements. I think it’s brought a modern look to my work that will reach a broader audience.
Any new exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?
I recently moved into a house with a detached work space. I’m so excited to step out of the house and right into my studio!
What is your favorite new product for 2016?
The chain tassel necklaces for sure! They are so simple, and can be worn in multiples or by themselves. Making chain tassels is tough, but the end result is so cool! I want to go make more right now.
What’s something you’ve learned through running your business in the past 12 months?
Once your business gains some momentum, the real work starts. You’ve got to stay committed to social media updates, as well as having new work for sale all the time. For a part time business, this can be hard to fit in to your day. I’ve realized how rewarding that commitment can be! It feels so good to gain more exposure and to see your business grow.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
The first custom piece I made was for a Seattle judge who wanted to give his wife a 15 piece necklace for their 15th wedding anniversary. He had a bag full of her grandmother’s china. It was a big challenge making a piece that large at the time, but I was really proud of my work and my client loved it. A few months ago he reached out to me again and asked for another necklace and earrings for their 20th anniversary. The traditional gift for 20 years happens to be china. I was so happy to have such a loyal client and to be sought after again after 5 years. I told him I”d see him in another 5 🙂
