Meet the Vendor: Yetis and Friends
Who are you and what do you do?
Hello there! We are husband and wife crafting team “Yetis and Friends”. We primarily build sometimes cute, sometimes spooky, mounted monster heads, but our interests lies anywhere fabric, scissors, and adventure is concerned. We’re hugely inspired by folklore, Dungeons and Dragons, Henson films, David Bowie, and all things magical. We also build our mounts using all synthetic fur and cast resin antlers so our animal friends get to enjoy our craft along with us!
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
A field guide for all of our monsters! People often ask us if the different monsters have names or personalities, and the answer is “yes, of course!”, but we’ve never had an organized, central place to find all of that information. So over the past month we’ve been working on a little journal style book with a lot of the world explained and some illustrations of yetis. Their full figures often look much different than people imagine! We’ll have a sneak peak at UCU as well as some mini prints of the work going into the book.
What is your favorite new product for 2015?
Ditch Dogs! Every month or so we scour the L.A fashion district for interesting and new furs. We’re sometimes limited to what the vendors have available, and the inspiration for what we build often comes from the fur we’re able to find. But for the longest time we had this idea for a horned desert wolf with African wild dog fur, but none of the furs we saw really did the idea justice. Then a few months later we found the perfect coat! In fact talking about it is making me anxious to go get another couples yards. Anyways, the design turned out just like we envisioned it would, which is always a rewarding experience.
How far will you be traveling to come to UCU?
We’re driving all the way from from the Los Angeles area to do UCU. We’re super excited, as it’s not only our first show in Washington, but also our first show outside of California. We’ve heard really good things about the crafting community in the Pacific North West, and we’ve been planning for years to come visit. We’re excited. Did I mention we’re excited? WE’RE EXCITED!
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
The same thing we do. The adventure. Whenever new customers come by our booth at an event, there’s usually this moment of cautious pause. You can read it in their faces, it’s really quite funny. They’re not sure what they’re looking at, if they’ve seen it before, if they even like it. It’s kind of like if you were to run across a small animal you’ve never seen before in the forest. Some people might back away slowly, unsure of what to make of the experience, but the people who stay, who are curious and want to know more about our what we do, find a neat world with very real representation that they can hold and touch and feel. Then they can share that experience with their friends when it’s hanging on their wall at home!
