Meet the Vendor: Urban Cheesecraft
Who are you and what do you do?
Hi! My name is Claudia Lucero, and I’m the Cheesy Experience Officer, or CEO, behind Urban Cheesecraft. I live in Portland, Oregon with my partner Jeff and our cheese-loving chihuahua, Lil’ Mama. I teach people to make simple cheeses via my DIY kits, classes, and our new book, One Hour Cheese- Jeff is our photographer, Lil’ Mama photo bombs.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I’m really excited to launch our line of Dairy Free Cheese Kits! The first is the Mozzarella and Ricotta. You can make great cheeses with cashews and almonds. The kits are Paleo and Vegan friendly, soy-free, GMO free, gluten free and carageenan free. I was dissatisfied with the vegan cheeses in stores so I’ve worked on my own recipes for a while and after constant customer requests, decided to finally launch these kits.
Any new exciting news you’d like to share with our readers?
I also have Dairy Free Brie, Feta, Cheddar and Goat Cheese kits coming.
What was your first memory of making something?
Tamales with my grandma.
How far will you be traveling to come to UCU?
From Portland, OR.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
Blowing minds! There are lots of myths about making cheese at home so I like to show people how easy it can be. NO cave, cow, raw milk or even bleach needed!
How did you get started in your business?
I learned to make cheese from books; rejected a lot of silly steps that were useless and when I simplified, I realized I could share something awesome with people. That’s when I came up with the idea for a kit and opened my shop on Etsy.
Who’s your biggest fan?
My mom, my partner and our chihuahua.
What’s your favorite item that you sell?
I like the Feta & Yogurt kit because it requires aging and fermentation but is so easy! I’m also pretty proud of our book. It’s gorgeous, breaks things down nicely with the step by step photos and I know how much work it took!
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
I hear a lot that I make things fun, approachable, take away the fear etc. They also love the art on our packaging and booklets.
