Meet the Vendor: The Bowl Maker
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Cary Lane and I am a bowl (and cup) maker. Using the bowl as the center, I write, draw, think, explore and go deep into the day. I have begun to connect all the bowls, writing and paintings through my home-made books and numbering system. I am also a mom and live in the foothills of Mt. Baker with my husband, 2 kids and 2 dogs. This morning I heard a bugling elk in our meadow as a little bear cub dashed across the driveway. I work from home so I can bake cookies and stoke the fire n-between making bowls. What a life!
What is your favorite new product for 2015?
I have started a life long project of making the 10,000 bowls. Numbering them and cataloging them has added a missing dimension to my experience as the maker. It makes the act of bowl making feel more connected. I love the science of the recording- who knows what I will discover by bowl 9,379…….
So, each bowl and cup will have a hand written number- and be recorded in the Great Book of Bowls.
What’s your favorite item that you sell?
My little poem book- “the small round poems of the bowl maker – vol. one”
This home-made book is the first sharing of my experience making the bowls and cups.
There is so much writing, thinking, discovering and painting that goes into each bowl- the book is a way to share the whole process, not just the bowl. I am so excited to make volume 2. This one will have more process.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
I get great feedback that people feel witnessed, feel happy, feel their souls, when eating out of my bowls- I also hear that it is great to have functional art that is really strong and everyday friendly.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
It made me feel so good when a wonderful woman stopped by to say that her family ate out of my their Bowl Maker bowls every morning – and that it makes them feel “so happy” every time! I also felt deeply touched when a kind woman stood quietly and made a bowl motion with her hands in front of her and said “your bowls are a place that holds soul”
