Meet the Vendor: Mugwump
Who are you and what do you do?
I create fun & funky handbags, wallets, & other accessories from reclaimed materials in my studio in Portland, Oregon.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I’ve been working on wee little calendars for 2016 that are a monthly tear off design using images from story books as the backing. Cute cute!
What was your first memory of making something?
My mom taught all the daughters in the family how to sew. That was 6 of us! I wanted to learn early so Mom, patient lady as she was, let me sew a few handkerchiefs with lacy edging. They were beautiful!
Is this a full-time business for you?
Creating wonderful accessories has become a full time business for me. I still will substitute teach elementary school in my old school sometimes, as that is where I started from, but now that’s on a rare occasion. I fully understand where people are coming from when they share what a wonderful thing it is to do what you love everyday.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
My customers seem to love the nostalgia of my products the most. I love listening to folks relate to the images and materials that the accessories are made from. They are all good memories of games played with family or music listened to or trips taken with maps guiding the way. I realized long ago that I sell what I call ‘functional nostalgia.’
