Meet the Vendor: Matthew Porter Art
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m a children’s book author and illustrator. I have 10 titles published but also have a line of images of a monkey that destroys the Space needle.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
I’ve been working on a book about a panda who loses his mother and has to find her by tracking her paw prints. Also, I have been thinking of revitalizing my first book – ABC. It is still my all time best selling book and has now gone out of print so I think there is an opportunity to create with a whole new set of animals and a whole new crew of parents!
Who’s your biggest fan?
I’m not sure about my biggest fan but I have to admit my favorite fans are the 10 – 14 year old boys. They have a very strong sense of what they like and will let you know if they love it or hate it. When they love it they just kind of take a moment in front of my booth and really check out the pictures and then often turn to Mom and say they think it is cool. Which I have a feeling from this age group is a huge compliment!
What’s something you’ve learned through running your business in the past 12 months?
It’s ok to take a break, figure out where you want to go next. For the past ten years I have a book scheduled for release every year. My last book was released in August and I have no other releases on the horizon for now but it feels good figuring out what I want to do next!
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
I think they like that it is graphic but has a strong sense of folk art combined with it as well to create a very “Matthew Porter” look.
