Meet the Vendor: dottyspeck
Who are you and what do you do?
I’m a gal named Kim who likes to stick little pieces of metal together!
What was your first memory of making something?
Aside from gajillions of drawings and play-doh stuff, the first thing that I was super excited about I made in a day camp type program at a clay studio. I think I was 9 or 10. We were instructed to make anything we wanted and for some reason I thought it’d be really cool to make a miniature toilet with a frog sitting on the seat (you know frogs like water!). It was really quite detailed with a tank, lid, seat, hole in the bottom and everything. When the instructor fired it, she put a clear blue marble inside so that when it melted it looked like there was real water in it. I was so stoked. Still not sure why I needed to make a toilet, but I love it and it’s sitting in my bathroom today on a shelf above the real one.
How far will you be traveling to come to UCU?
About 6 miles. I would travel hundreds of miles for this one, though, if I had to. It’s the best.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
Meeting people face to face. Especially ones who’ve bought from me online or from a nearby shop. It’s always satisfying to put a face to a name. I also love how many folks are trying to buy for their partners who are also at the show and are trying to be super sneaky about it. It’s darling.
How did you get started in your business?
I had a notion to make myself a simple chain. This was way before etsy and there was nowhere (at least not in Olympia) to find jewelry that was super simple that wasn’t mass produced or imported. I gathered a super basic arsenal of tools and some silver and went at it in the painting studio I had at the time. Lots of things went wrong, but I figured it out. Actually, I’m still figuring it out.
Where do you see your business in 3 years?
Busier, I hope. I really do love doing what I do, but I must confess that my creative brain doesn’t do the business end as well as it could. I’m working on that 😉
I also want to do more one of a kind, crazy, intuitive pieces. I hope to be fully into that then.
What’s your favorite item that you sell?
Hmmmm…. I think I have to say that my oxidized up and down earrings are my favorite. Oddly, I can’t stand wearing earrings, but if I did it would be these all day, every day.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
It’s delicateness and simplicity.
