Meet the Vendor: Blackwood Fiber
Who are you and what do you do?
Hi! I’m Mia, the hands behind Blackwood Fiber. I make boldly patterned knitwear and accessories out of 100% natural fibers. Everything is made on vintage knitting machines from the 60’s and 70’s in my tiny Tacoma studio.
What is your favorite new product for 2015?
My favorite new product would have to be my 100% bamboo tunics. They were originally only going to be available in the summer months, but I love them too much! I like wearing mine over leggings with an over sized cardigan. These are knit up in my favorite patterns and vibrant color combos. I can’t wait to show them to the UCU crowd!!
Is this a full-time business for you?
It is! I get to sell year round at Pike Place Market here in Seattle as well as online. When I’m not at Pike Place I’m sure to be found at my knitting machine. It’s a lot of work, but incredibly fulfilling and freeing! I may be working more than 40 hours, but I enjoy every part of my job.
Who’s your biggest fan?
My family and friends have been really supportive! I hit the ground running when I started Blackwood Fiber and they have been there to cheer me on. Everyone has tested new products, helped me weave in loose ends for show prep, brought me cookies when I thought I couldn’t knit anymore….. Thanks guys!
What’s your favorite item that you sell?
I really love selling my one of a kind Pom Pom beanies! Each one is so unique, it’s a lot of fun seeing who they find a home with. They’re also my favorite item to make because I get to let loose and experiment with different color combinations. It can be therapeutic after a long studio day of knitting black and white!
