Meet the Author: Carrie Schmitt
Carrie will be signing her book, Painted Blossoms, at Urban Craft Uprising! Check our schedule to see when she will be there.
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a full-time artist who began painting in 2009 after developing a life threatening allergy to heat. No longer able to spend time in my beloved garden, I began painting flowers instead of planting them. Today, I paint daily from my mountain studio just outside Seattle, WA. My art is licensed for home décor and stationery with companies such as Hallmark, teNeues Publishing, Dianoche Designs and Woodmansterne. I also teach an online yoga inspired art e-course called Journey to the Self that blends my passions for yoga and art-making. You can learn more at www.carrieschmittdesign.com
Tell us about Painted Blossoms and what inspired you to write it.
Painted Blossoms celebrates the joy of painting flowers and shares mixed media and acrylic painting techniques to create endless possibilities with color, form and texture.
Each chapter features step-by-step instructions, inspiring tips from contributing artists and prompts to enhance creative expression. Techniques explored throughout the book include collage, textured layers, hand-carved stamps, stencils and how to collaborate with a friend to create an original work of art.

How long have you been creating art?
I began painting in 2009 as a therapeutic practice to deal with the limitations from having a severe allergy to heat. I was barely able to walk without reacting to my own body heat, which was quite depressing and debilitating. Today, my allergy is not as severe, and I can do some physical activity, such as yoga and swimming.
What is your favorite medium to work with?
I love paint! My favorite is oil, but I cannot stand the smell and know how toxic it can be so I use acrylics. There are mediums that make the acrylic paint have a similar consistency and slow drying time similar to oils, which I still need to explore.
Where can we find your book?
Do you have any other projects coming up that you can tell us about?
YES! I am excited to be teaching two workshops at the Art Makers Denver retreat on September 21-24. You can find out more about that here.
I will be presenting a FREE live online presentation about my art journey with Artists Network on July 21. You can sign up to listen and even ask live questions here.
Thanks so much for sharing your amazing story and journey with us, Carrie! We can’t wait to see you at UCU in just a few short weeks.
