Meet Our Vendor: Hazy Dell Press
We love family businesses! It’s so great to hear the stories behind these creative businesses and these twin’s don’t disappoint! Say hello to Hazy Dell Press! One does the art, the other does the writing and these books are so great! My niece loves them all and has the whole collection! Give the gift that keeps giving!
Who are you and what do you do?
We are an author/illustrator team that creates offbeat and humorous children’s books that promote diversity, empathy and imagination—and that parents can enjoy as much as their kids. We started with our first book, Monster ABC, in 2015, and have since published 4 more books in the Hazy Dell Press Monster Series: Goodnight Krampus; Get Dressed, Sasquatch!; Hush Now, Banshee!; and Don’t Eat Me, Chupacabra! / ¡No Me Comas, Chupacabra!
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
Our latest book is Don’t Eat Me, Chupacabra! / ¡No Me Comas, Chupacabra!, a story featuring digestible Spanish vocabulary that follows a young goat who must convince the little Chupacabra that there are many yummy things to eat besides him. The book is set in Puerto Rico (where the Chupacabra legend originates) and we’re donating $1 from every book pre-order to Puerto Rican hurricane relief and recovery efforts.
What do you love most about craft show vending?
We love vending at Urban Craft Uprising. It’s a special experience to meet and have conversations with attendees and experience their real-time reaction to our products. Ever since we debuted our first book, Monster ABC, at Urban Craft Uprising three years ago, UCU attendees have been very helpful in helping us decide which monsters to feature in subsequent books. Customers have been demanding a Chupacabra book for a long time, so it feels great to finally deliver!
How did you get started in your business?
We got started with the simple idea to create an alphabet book that wasn’t boring for parents. We funded our first book with a Kickstarter campaign and it’s been full speed ahead ever since. We didn’t imagine that three years later we would have 5 titles under our belts and a whole universe of monster characters.
What do your customers love most about your product(s)?
Parents love that our books appeal to their sensibilities as much as their kids. We love providing a respite for parents who are inundated with children’s books that are saccharine, trite or otherwise not very thoughtful. It’s our goal to inspire more engaged and frequent reading interaction between parents and their children, so this is really the best feedback we could ask for.
Happy Monday! If you want to get rid of a case of the Monday’s…go on over to our Instagram account for your chance to win a copy of Hush Now, Banshee! Good Luck!
