Meet Author Kristen Rask
How did you first get started crocheting?
I first learned to knit and couldn’t switch my brain to crochet even though I really wanted to learn. After a few friends tried to teach me and I was just not getting it, I decided to take a class. I really like the movement of crochet better and I also enjoy the instant gratification you get with crochet. I think knitting is for more patient people. When I have the time, knitting is still very nice.
What inspires you in your craft?
Oh man, it is just something I HAVE to do. If I don’t have as much time for crafting I start getting crabby and sad. I have always been a maker and never can imagine a life without making stuff. I get inspired by so much from a conversation with a friend to my meal. What doesn’t inspire me?
How did you turn your hobbies into a successful business and book writing career?
I have been making stuff for a long time now. I started doing craft shows about 20years ago. From there I started selling in shops. I started making rings that were selling pretty well and met Sally the owner of Fancy from that. We became friends and she suggested I open up a shop next to hers. I hated what I was doing and I guess I was just in the mood to risk it and two days later I had a lease. From there I was able to use the platform of Schmancy to do the plush show I host every year, Plush You! which garnered some attention and from that I got a book deal and from that I got more book deals.
Do you have any advice for crafters on running a creative business?
I am a firm believer in starting small and growing. It’s SO overwhelming and vulnerable. If you start small, you learn lessons along the way but it may not cost you your business. They may cost ya’ but hopefully not the whole pot if you know what I am saying. I am super amazed at people that just go crazy and do this huge business plan as so much gets thrown at you that you can not expect not to mention you can totally burn out. So start small and grow, grow, grow!
What is your next book about?
Sadly I can’t talk about that just yet but I hope I have another one or two books out in 2014.
