Dolls for Friends
Who are you and what do you do?
We are Jill and Erin Lynch of Dolls for Friends. We call Vancouver, WA home, and have been creating unique plush for the past six years. We find inspiration in everyday life-maybe a goofy kids joke, animation, animals, music, something from our childhood, there is so much that influences our style. We love to draw, and all of our designs are taken from illustrations in our sketchbooks. We try to use reclaimed or vintage materials as much as possible, it’s always fun to see an old sweater be transformed into something completely new and monstrous!
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
We have been doing a lot of sketching, and samples over the past few months. We have many orphans in the “not quite” pile, and are refining until we get the pieces just right. We are looking forward to creating some fun new pieces for UCU.
Are you debuting anything new at the winter show?
Yes, we have been working on new patterns for pieces over the past few months. We are excited about unveiling them at UCU. This is our first big show of the holiday season!
What do your customers love most about your products?
We have had some great feedback over the years, we love our customers! The biggest compliment we receive is that our pieces have great facial expresssions/personalities. That means so much because we take the most time positioning faces in order to get the right “mood” for each one. Our customers also like that we use a pretty large variety of different fabrics on our dolls.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
We were contacted by a man that wanted to know if we could re-create one of our monsters that he had seen at a show, but had sold. What he didn’t know is that his girlfriend had already purchased it for him (she contacted us later). Then the girlfriend contacted us asking us to re-create a doll she had seen on our flickr feed, which her boyfriend had secretly purchased for her already! They lived on opposite coasts (he on the west, she on the east) and neither knew what the other one was doing! All within a few days of each other! It was so fun being a part of their secret gifting, and it ended with us making an entire new custom order of monsters to go with the other dolls they had bought, whew!
