Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Gesine and I am an artist and animation professional. My small sculptures are funny and whimsical and often tell a story. Favorites include Worry Warts, Grumpy Pets, Bunnies and Squids. They are crafted with a lot of attention to detail and durability. All of them are originals that only exist once. The smaller ones are made from a combination of polymer clay and epoxy clay, the bigger ones also contain paper clay, which I make myself. I do not work with molds because I am not interested in just producing one item over and over.
This is a terrible business model, because it obviously takes me a lot longer to design, make, paint, name and photograph each individual sculpture, but it makes me happy.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
There’s a Zoo in my head and every so often I release some of the creatures into the world. I usually start with a quick sketch and then go to sculpting them. Right now I am making pets with tiny hand knit sweaters, that are turning out pretty adorable. I should have some of
them ready for UCU!
Is this a full-time business for you?
I am a full-time artist and I do a number of art-centric jobs. Currently I am working on several illustrated children’s books. I am also doing lots of sculpture work for an upcoming art show and I work in commercial animation, designing, directing and animating. My website http://gesinekratzner.com is the place to visit and get an idea of all the fun things that I am up to.
What do your customers love most about your products?
People love the humor in my work. Children especially relate to my creatures. That is the biggest compliment to me! I never get tired of seeing people react to my work when they approach my booth. People of all ages just light up or burst out into laughter when they stop by to have a closer look. This is why I love doing this work.
All my sculptures have a lot of personality. They almost look like there is a little clay heart in that little clay body.
What’s the best experience you’ve ever had with one of your customers?
Through my etsy store https://www.etsy.com/shop/blobhouse I sell a lot of bunny pairs that people use as love tokens or as wedding cake toppers. One customer contacted me about a year after she bought one of these couples to request a custom baby bunny. Their family had grown and she wanted the bunny family to reflect this! I find it really sweet when people identify themselves or their pets with my sculptures.
