A Summer Afternoon
Who are you and what do you do?
We are Aaron and Erin Nuland, a husband and wife duo making hand-crafted, natural wooden toys. Aaron designs and makes the toys, while Erin takes care of the business side of things. We started this business because we were tired of the cheaply-made, loud, breakable plastic toys that everyone kept giving to our boys, and also because we wanted Aaron to be able to spend more time with our boys while they are young.
All of our toys are designed to encourage creative play, as well as fine and gross motor skills. They are hand-crafted out of natural hardwoods, sanded smooth, and finished with our homemade beeswax wood finish or natural linseed oil, so they are completely child-safe. You can preview a listing of our toys at https://www.etsy.com/shop/asummerafternoon/.
What’s the latest thing you’ve been working on?
We are working on coming up with a wooden memory game, as well as an entire list of items that we have dreamed of over the years. I don’t know if we will have any of them finished before the holidays, but we will be increasing our offerings as soon as we can!
Is this a full-time business for you?
This is a full-time gig for us. We sell online and at craft shows around the country. We love meeting new people at all of our shows, and getting to see such wonderful and different areas of the country!
Who’s your biggest fan?
Our biggest fans are our 2 and 4 year old boys …every toy we have designed, we have done so with them in mind. They love to help us make the toys and they test every new toy we design. If they don’t enjoy it or if it doesn’t stand up to the rough play of two boys–we don’t sell it.
What’s your favorite item that you sell?
We love all of our toys, which is why we make them, but our favorite is probably our ferris wheel. Our kids love it, and we enjoy watching kids and adults alike come into our booth and give it a good spin.
What do your customers love most about your products?
Our customers love that our toys are durable and natural. They are safe for their kids to play with, and they are made to last for generations to come.
